The great wildebeest Migration 2022/2023

Tanzania Safaris & Kilimanjaro Climbing with Kanje Grand Tours

Over 2 million migratory animals, on a mission for survival, move in a clockwise direction across the Serengeti, Masai Mara, northern Ngorongoro, Maswa game reserve, and the Loliondo controlled area during the great wildebeest migration, creating a natural display.

The great wildebeest migration by numbers

Although there is no precise estimate, it is believed that there are over 1.4 million wildebeest, over 350 000 zebra, over 300 000 gazelles (Thomson & Grant gazelles), and over 6000 elands among the migrating species.

Why the great wildebeest migration occurs, why wildebeest migrate?

As a result of their need to travel and graze, the wildebeest migrate across the Serengeti, Masai Mara, Ngorongoro, Maswa, and Lolimondo areas. These animals follow the wildebeests to greener pastures because of their keen sense of smell and instinct for recognizing where it is raining.

The wildebeest migrate through the Serengeti, Masai Mara, Ngorongoro, Maswa, and Lolimondo areas in response to their needs; the migration is essential to their survival as these animals consume over 4000 tons of food each day. They move to greener pastures by following the wildebeests, who use their sense of smell and instinct to determine where it is raining so these animals move to favorable ecosystems for their survival.

1. Mineral enriched plains & short grass, – on calving season these animals move to the mineral enriched plains in south Serengeti & northern ngorongoro, where they get minerals essential for their bones & bodies while they give birth & nurture their newborns – on calving season these short grass & plains are strategic for them to spot predators.
2. Green pastures & water, these animals move to allocate green pastures & water which they like to feed on
3. When the weather turns dry, the western and northern corridors of the Serengeti are less affected than the plains because these regions have trees and bushes.

The world’s longest overland migration is the Great Wildebeest Migration. The Great Migration is not only the world’s biggest overland migration, but it is also the longest. Each cycle, the herds cover at least 500 miles (800 km) in distance.

why great wildebeest migration animals move together?

As part of the great wildebeest migration, animals like wildebeest, zebra, gazelles, and elands move together in search of greener pastures and water. However, these animals also form strategic alliances.
For instance, other animals follow wildebeest to green pastures because of their keen sense of smell and instincts to follow the rains. However, because zebras and other animals have greater vision, they can warn herds of potential predators.

Best time to visit & see the great wildebeest migration

Seeing the great wildebeest migration year in and year out is a wonderful experience, but some moments or highlights are considered by tourists and other interested parties to be the greatest times to watch these migratory creatures.
Below are some of the highlights of the great wildebeest migration.

Highlights of the great wildebeest migration

1: calving season (December to march); During this time, migratory animals like wildebeest and zebras will be giving birth to and caring for their young. This occurs in a location named “Ndutu,” which is mineral-rich, plain, and covered with short grass, and is located in the southern Serengeti and northern Ngorongoro.

It is the ideal moment to see a live hunt because there are thousands of neonates generated every day and predators are actively hunting and very close by.
For calves, February is the best month.

2: Mara river crossing (July – October); Since you’ve read the above, you now understand that crossing is necessary for their survival. As a result, thousands of wildebeest will be expected to cross the Mara River for green pastures and water in Masai Mara despite the threat posed by crocodiles. If you’ve ever watched National Geographic and seen thousands of wildebeest crossing a river while crocodiles feast on them, this is typically what happens.

Why is the mara river crossing better than the Grumeti river crossing?

On the cycle of the great wildebeest migration, these animals cross the Grumeti river & mara river while on both rivers they face the crocodile’s mara river crossing is said to be a better view than the Grumeti river crossing this is down to the following reasons

  • Unlike the Grumeti river, the mara river is not surrounded by trees so you get a better view of the crossing and action
  • The mara river has more crocodiles and hippos in comparison to the Grumeti river
  • The mara river has a small descend and ascend into and out from the river hence better view and more action
  • The Mara river surroundings suit best lions to prey on the migration just after the crossing so better action

Note: August is more precise for the mara river crossing

3. Grumeti river crossing (June – July); at this time, it is expected the great wildebeest migration will be crossing the Grumeti river, this river is situated in western Serengeti where vegetation shifts from plains to little forests and bushes where the migration passes through when it starts to get dry

Why a migration tour package

  • Predators don’t migrate, but when the migration crosses paths with their territories, they will be attentive and prey on these animals. This increases the likelihood of encountering predators and makes it more likely that they will be in action.
  • Great Animal density As the Serengeti is quite big and the migration is in the north Serengeti, people who take a migration tour will view more animals. If you choose a trip centered on middle Serengeti & the migration is in the north Serengeti, you will see more animals.
  • Great understanding of migration You should schedule a migration tour if you are interested in learning more about migration. Despite the fact that other excursions occasionally coincide with the migration, they don’t focus on it.
  • Photographic Safari

if you are keen on doing a photographic tour you should opt for one that will also cover the migration, you will surely have better & surreal images and videos
