When to climb for kilimanjaro safari

The best time and month to climb kilimanjaro safari tends to be January, February and September, when the weather is warm, the sky is visible and the risk of rain is minimal. June, July, and august are also favorable though its cold season/winter in Tanzania.

March, June, November or December are rainy seasons making it tougher to climb but with proper preparation one can summit to the top.

Weather on Mount kilimanjaro safari

Standing in an elevation of 5,785 meters above sea level, Mount Kilimanjaro is 60 km in width (kilimanjaro safari is thick yo! that makes it sexy to climb.) and 100 km in length with its own beautiful zonal vegetation. Climatic conditions on Kilimanjaro varies with attitude, from a tropical climate to artic conditions at the summit.

The foothills of  kilimanjaro safari enjoy summer annually, temperature ranges from 25 to 30C yearlong. At the top temperatures ranges from -10 to -25C. In general, every 200meters you climb temperature drops by 1C.

kilimanjaro safari experiences two wet seasons, the long monsoon rains between March and May, and the short rainy season which starts in the middle of October to the end of December. Kilimanjaro base experiences 2000mm of rain compared to 100mm of rain at top(summit).

Itinerary

Day 1Arrive at Arusha

Arrive at the Kilimanjaro International Airport, Arusha airport, Julius K Nyerere Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) and Jomo Kenyatta Airport (Kenya), you will be meet there with us at the Airport and transfer to the Hotel in Moshi or Arusha or any Hotel for your overnight before starting trekking Mount Kilimanjaro/ mount Meru.

Day 2MACHAME ROUTE (MACHAME CAMP)

Your day starts early morning with a briefing followed by breakfast and 1hour drive from Moshi town to the Machame village where your guides, cook and porters prepare and pack your equipment and supplies. You will receive a lunch pack, and you can also buy snacks and some mineral water in the supermarket found on the way or in Moshi town.
The road is very nice it may be possible to drive from the village to the Machame gate for 30 minutes from the high way to the gate or starting point and register to Kilimanjaro National Park (KINAPA). After registering at the park office, you will start you ascend and enter the rain forest. On this zone of the mountain often transform the trail into a soggy, slippery experience; so, wear a good foot gear, trekking poles, and gaiters are useful. You will enjoy a lunch stop half way up and will reach the Macham camping area in the late afternoon. Your porters will arrive at camp before you and will setup well your tents before you arrive.
In the evening the porters boil drinking and washing water while the cock prepares your dinner and save with the waiter after you will meet with your guide for briefing for tomorrow. Night temperature can drop to freezing at the Machame camp so use well your gear sleeping bag)

Day 3MACHAME ROUTE (MACHAME CAMP TO SHIRA CAVE)

You will work up early morning at the Machame camp according to the briefing and after breakfast start climb for an hour to the top of the forest, then for 3 hours through a gentle moorland. After a short lunch and rest you continue up a rocky ridge on to the shira plateau where you will be able to see Kilimanjaro great Western breach with its stunning glaciers. Sometimes the walls of the western Breach are draped with extensive ice curtains.
You are now west of Kibo on the opposite side of the Mountain from the Marangu Route, you will reach at the shira campsite. The porters will boil washing water before serving lunch after having lunch you will have a short rest then you will go to see acclimatization’s after you will have crew introduction, then dinner.

Day 4MACHAME ROUTE (SHIRA CAVE TO LAVA TOWER TO BARRANCO CAMP)

You will wake up early morning and having breakfast, after you will walk for 3 or 4hours to reach to the lava tower early afternoon and there you will have hot lunch and this place you will reach to the highest elevation 4600 masl this is the same with the high camp (barafu camp) after lunch you will descent to barranco camp for 2 hours to reach to the camp, and there you will have hot washing water after you will have tea then night you save dinner, barranco camp its very cold during the night temperature can drop to freezing

Day 5MACHAME ROUTE (BARRANCO CAMP TO KARANGA CAMP)

After an early morning breakfast, it’s now the time to conquer the great Baranco wall! Although it may look intimating at first glance, hikers’ states that this class two hike is usually much easier than they anticipated. At the top of the wall, you will at the view of hem glacier and you will be above the cloud. The trail then winds up and down in the Karanga valley this is an ideal hiking day for acclimatization you will have lunch and dinner.

Day 6MACHAME ROUTE (KARANGA CAMP TO BARAFU CAMP)

Following breakfast, you will leave Karanga camp the trail intersects with the Mweka route which the trail used to descend on the final two days. As you continue hiking for an hour you will reach Barafu hut. This is the last water stop for the porters because there is no accessible water at the Barafu camp. The word Barafu in Swahili means ice and this camp is located on a lock exposed ridge tents will be exposed to winds and rocks so it’s important for hikers to familiarize themselves with the camp site before dark. An early dinner will be saved, so hikers can rest before attempting the summit the same night. Your Guide will brief in detail on how to prepare for summit night. Get to sleep by 19 pm

Day 7SUMMIT TIME BARAFU CAMP TO UHURU PEAK TO MWEKA CAMP

Your guide will awake around 23:30pm for tea and biscuits. You will then begin your summit, the route heads North west and you will ascend over stone scree. During the ascend many hikers feel that this the most mentally and physically challenging the part of the climb. In about six hours you will reach stella point (5756m) located on the crater rim. After enjoying the magnificent sunrise, you will continue ascending for about one hour on snow covered trail to uhuru peak (5895m) reaching the summit of mountain Kilimanjaro is a life time accomplishment, you will able to spend a short time in the summit taking photograph and drinking tea before the descend to Barafu. Begin the hike back down to Barafu camp take about two hours at camp you will rest and enjoy a hot lunch in the sun. After eating you will continue descending to mweka hut (3100m); Is in the upper rain forest so fog and rain should be expected, you will have hot washing water and dinner will be saved, after having meal you rest soundly at camp.
